A Wales Fit for Children and Young People launched, May 2007 [W]

Children in Wales launched A Wales Fit for Children and Young People in May 2007. The document challenges politicians to address the overarching issues that our members believe require attention, in order to improve the lives of children and young people living in Wales.

It recommends a number of key actions, including

  • The creation of a National Assembly for Wales cross-cutting Scrutiny Committee for Children and Young PeopleThe creation of a Welsh Assembly Government Committee for children and Young People with an adequate level of civil service resource to support it across all aspects of WAG Ministerial portfolios
  • Strengthening the role of the Minister for Children (and young people)
  • The creation of a strategy to promote and implement the UN Convention on the Right of the Child.
  • Reviewing the overall balance of investment in children
  • Supporting partnership working
  • Improving procurement processes
  • Adequate resources for new policies and strategies
  • Consideration of a research strategy for children and young people
  • Measures to support core services
  • Funding according to need
  • Monitoring the implementation of previous reports
  • Support for early intervention programmes
  • Ensuring that children’s needs are central to childcare policies and practice

Children in Wales intends to organise a mid way review in May 2009 to assess progress.
