No Excuses: Ensuring the Welfare and Well-being of Disabled Children and Young People
No Excuses: Ensuring the Welfare and Well-being of Disabled Children and Young People

Location: Merthyr Tydfil
Date: 28 Feb 2012
Organiser: Children in Wales

A one-day course facilitated by Windfall Training

Research has reported that disabled children and young people are three times more likely to experience abuse and neglect than typically developing children, and that is just based on reported events. Clearly there are specific risks to disabled children and additional skills are required to ensure their welfare in the home, in care and residential placements. This course will offer the opportunity for discussion and debate in this most complex and challenging areas of safeguarding.

This course will explore:

  • The particular vulnerabilities for disabled children and young people
  • Early risk assessment and possible responses
  • The verbal and non-verbal skills which underpin effective communication
  • Strategies for good all-round communication based on the ethos of ‘Total Communication’
  • Potential conflicts between safeguarding and ensuring the human rights of vulnerable individuals

COST:
Members £115
Non-members £135
